The Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd. was formed in the year 1980 and registered under the Sikkim State Cooperative Societies Act, 1978. It is an apex body of the primary milk producers’ cooperative societies formed at the village level on Anand Model Milk Cooperatives. Its area of operation extends to the whole of Sikkim expect North District. Two Milk processing plants one each at Tadong, Gangtok and other at Karfectar, Jorethang of having processing capacities of 10,000 and 5,000 litres per day respectively were setup under Government of India’s Centrally Sponsored scheme executed by NDDB. Later in the year 1991, a chilling plant was installed at Gyalshing for collection of milk of far and remote areas of West district.
The Board of Directors consists of 12 members of whom six are elected members and the rest being nominated by the State Government.

Major achievements of Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers Union Ltd
Thee Union is providing ready market and remunerative price for milk producers farmers of the far flung remote villages of the State and in turn supply of pasteurized hygienic milk and milk products to the urban consumers at reasonable market rates.
Under Integrated Dairy Development Project SCMU increased the processing capacity of Gangtok plant from 10000 LPD to 25000 LPD and Jorethang Plant from 5000 LPD to 15000 LPD
Under the project, all functional milk societies of South, West and East districts distributed Automatic Milk Collection Units. The Government of India under National Programme for Dairy Development also provided fund for installation of additional 53 nos of Automatic Milk Collection Unit to leftover functional milk cooperative societies.
Coolers for strengthening infrastructures of primary milk societies for quality and clean milk production.Under the project, the Union has also provided Deep fridges, Chest Coolers as well as 31 nos of Bulk Milk
The turnover business of SMU has also been increased to many folds. Besides marketing in Gangtok and surroundings the SMU also supplying quality milk to Army Units and armed forces stationed in Sikkim and some parts of North Bengal. As quality assurance the dairy plant at Gangtok has also been ISO certified since 2014.
Being declared Sikkim as an Organic farming State, a single brand name “Kanchenjunga” has been adopted for all milk products of the Union
